Second Generation Computers;1953-1963: Transistors replaced vacuum tubes in this era. These transistors allowed computers to decrease in size, and to work faster to complete operations. However computers still relied on punch cards for inputs and printout outputs. Computers also moved to assembly language, which allowed the operator to specify a command in words, instead of machine language.
